What is a Probate Valuation?
A probate valuation reflects the open market value of an item at the date of death for estate administration and inheritance tax purposes. Probate valuations are commonly required by executors, solicitors and professional advisers when administering estates and preparing submissions to HMRC.
Under Section 160 of the UK Inheritance Tax Act 1984, probate valuations should reflect the price an item might reasonably achieve if offered for sale on the open market in a willing buyer–willing seller situation.
Open market valuation differs significantly from insurance replacement valuation and requires careful consideration of condition, provenance, rarity, market demand and comparable sales evidence.
All probate reports prepared by The Jewellery & Watch Consultancy are completed by an Independent Registered Valuer and are compliant with Section 160 of the UK Inheritance Tax Act 1984.
